2005 STATE CHAMPIONSHIP RETRIEVING TRIAL
Posted Saturday, September 24, 2005 by webian

The SCRT Committee make plans for the State Championship trial throughout the season, and with the support and sponsorship of Advance Petfood in cash and product, and wonderful donations of major placegetter prizes by Blackboy Kennels, and other prizes donated by Marie Ewen and Richard and Anna Courtman, the trophy table always looks stunning.

The site for this years championship trial was at the Williams' farm near the town of Goomalling, located on the Mortlock River. This site can be dicey for the running of trials, as the river goes up and down within a day, and rain close to the date of the trial really is a prerequisite. Well rain it did; in the early hours of Saturday morning down she came, and continued on through most of Saturdays runs, along with cold and gusty gale force winds, rendering the rain horizontal at times. Fun !!!

Considering the day before had been one of the hottest days recorded in September, and that snakes are beginning to emerge, we were probably lucky to have the colder conditions for the trial.

Nineteen dogs were entered, and after two scratchings, 17 dogs actually fronted for the start. Ten Labradors and seven Golden Retrievers. The judge Ray Johnson addressED competitors before the commencement of the trial stating he expected marks to be fired at whilst in the air & persons not doing so would be eliminated. Dogs breaking and not brought under control within a certain length would also be heavily penalised. Wishing all competitors luck, No. 1 was called for, upon which competitors asked if they could possibly see the run before facing up. A humorous start to this years trial !!

DATE: 17TH AND 18TH SEPTEMBER 2005
JUDGE: MR. RAY JOHNSON

DAY ONE:
RUN ONE: Double Mark (Thrown simultaneously and in line. Any order of pickup) 16 dogs through.

RUN TWO: Mark, blind and two bird (long blind 40' right & behind the mark, was first pickup. On dog's return a very low two bird to the dog's right. Doubt that dog's saw this throw. 2 bird was the next pickup, then the mark which was between the blind and 2 bird and very similar distance out.) 10 dogs through.

RUN THREE: Triple Mark. (Along narrow section of water & very rocky and dense undergrowth. An optional relocation for handlers for firing at 1st mark. All marks across the water and in close proximity to each other). 7 dogs through.

RUN FOUR: Sighted rabbit and wounded game (rabbit). 7 dogs through.

DAY TWO:

RUN FIVE: Double Mark and doublefall. (Pickup order, both marks then the doublefall). 3 dogs through.

RUN SIX: Double Blind and mark, plus nono bird. (Interesting run with the mark (bird) disappearing under the water to reappear some metres further along. This was to simulate a wounded duck and happened several times over for each dog.) 3 dogs finished.

The Labrador Retriever Club held their final All Age Stake for the season at Brookleigh Equestrian Centre at Upper Swan, on September 4th. "THE LINK SULLIVAN MEMORIAL CUP" ALL AGE STAKE
Posted Sunday, September 4, 2005 by webian

The Retrieving Club held their final All Age stake for the season at the Lavender Farm at Toodyay on September 3rd. It was great to be back at this lovely site after a couple of years break. A fine day was forecast for the Saturday, but a heavy fog in the morning delayed the start of the four run trial for a while.

JUDGE: Ms Norma Turner

ENTRIES: 15
STARTED: 15
FINISHED: 1

Run 1: Triple Mark with walkup. Order of pickup had to be nominated by the handler before commencement of the run. Two pickups were visible by the handler. The centre long mark, was out of sight. Topscoring dog was Tosca and Kerry Webster.

Run 2: Blind, double mark with wounded game. Blind was across the river & up the bank beyond granite rocks. The marks were landing within ten metres of each other with one being dragged a further 50+ metres as a wounded. Either mark could be picked up first. Topscoring dog was Indi and Eleanor Johnson.

Run 3: Doublefall + decoys. Both retrieves involved swimming against the current of the Avon River. The doublefall was deeper than the mark & thrown with its arch appearing over the fall of the mark, landing on an island mid river. Topscoring dog was Josh and Judy Pannett.

Run 4: Blind and double mark. Two retrieves across the river. Pickup order, mark across the river, mark on land, blind across river.
Topscoring dog was Josh and Judy Pannett.

G.S.P. CLUB ALL AGE - 28TH AUGUST 2005
Posted Sunday, August 28, 2005 by webian

One of the Goomalling sites was used for this trial again this year. Again, an Eastern States judge had been asked to visit W.A. for the weekend of trials, and a good entry for the All Age stake looked like a healthy beginning. Unfortunately for most, this was not to be.

CLUB; G.S.P. CLUB

SITE: GOOMALLING

STAKE; ALL AGE (Wauchope Farwalked Woman trophy)

JUDGE: MR. WAYNE POHOLKE (VIC)

ENTRIES: 16
STARTED: 15
FINISHED: 4

Run One: Doublemark with a walkup and a blind. Handlers commenced the walkup from the gunsteward, and a short mark landed about 15 metres out on land parallet with the f.p. Dogs were not to pick this bird up. Facing across the river, a mark was throw L to R with the fall unseen. Dog was sent for this mark and as it reached the far bank, the handler fired at a blind placed approx 25 degrees off the line to the mark and a further ten metres. The handler then left the f.p. and picked up the walkup mark, leaving the dog to do the retrieve. Unfortunately nine of the dogs were put off their line by the shot at the blind and scented this bird, rather than the mark and consequently left the competition. One dog was unable to get the blind and also left the scene. Six dogs completed the run successfully. Topscoring dog Josh and Judy Pannett.

Run Two: Blind with nono bird, walkup mark and mark/wounded game.
Handlers fired at a blind placed behind brush in the river, then calling the dog to heel walked at 90 dgs to the blind whereupon a mark was thrown R to L over the water to land just right of the line to the blind. Handler proceeded to another f.p. where a mark thrown L to R landed in grass. As the dog retrieved the blind, this mark was picked up in preparation for the wounded game retrieve which was through/under a ringlock fence and placed in a dense pigface brush paddock. Pickup order, blind, short mark, wounded game. Topscorer not known.

Run three: Double mark and two bird, plus diversionary bird.
As dog and handler walked toward f.p. a startled "duck" three feet to the left of the dog was dragged. This was not fired at, nor for dogs to lunge towards. Proceeding to f.p., a ringlock & wire fence was directly in front. Short mark at 100 metres almost directly in front was thrown L to R, then long mark at 140 metres and 45 dgs right was thrown R to L. Handler to lift fence for dog to get under for the retrieves. Handlers choice of pickup. All deliveries to be with fence between dog and handler & all retrieves from that point. As dog picked up long mark a two bird was thrown to the dogs left. Topscoring dog Swanny and Kerry Webster.

1st: Featherhunt Joshua RRD (Josh) Lab.D. Judy Pannett 127 pnts

2nd: R.T.Ch Altiquin Stern (Guinness) Lab.D. Maggie Hankinson 124 pnts

3rd: Firefield Swanny RRD (Swanny) Lab.D. Kerry Webster 112 pnts

Other competitors: Guncreek Amy, Ellishea Asks Gypsy, Mhadaidh Im Xtra Special, Wauchope Indiana Jones, Burberry Highclaire, Featherhunt Kit, Dorjetaime Kiris Sunhunni, Mhadaidh Miss Muffet, Glenregal Royal Lord, Mhadaidh Hot Cinnamon, Anwylaid Magic Matiya,

GUN DOG CLUB NOVICE & RESTRICTED 27TH AUGUST
Posted Sunday, August 28, 2005 by webian

The Gun Dog Club and the GSP club combined resources to hold a Novice and Restricted trail on the 27th August, and an All Age stake on August 28th, at a site on the Mortlock River at Goomalling. The Saturday had a fine day forecast with temps around 20 degrees. A small field for the Novice was disappointing, leaving us all wondering where our Novice dogs have gone to. A reasonable entry of 11 dogs for Restricted made it a real competition with the judge, Wayne Poholke, from Victoria, raising some of the competitors eyebrows.
Results and descriptions are as follows:

NOVICE: (BRINN MEMORIAL TROPHY)

Entries: 7
Started: 4
Finishes: 4

Three shortish marks all about 65 metres in length, with two incorporating crossing water. Most coped well with all three retrieves, with the biggest fault being overrunning the mark. It is pleasing that all four dogs finished the trial.

1st: Ch. Blackboy Coal Digger AI (Digger) Lab.D. Glenice McClure 130 pnts.

2nd: Wauchope Jackpot (Chelsea) GSP.B. Ray Johnson 117 pnts

3rd: Anwylaid Enfin Tyasha CD (Asha) Gold.B. Donna Blackman 107 pnts

This was NRD title for Digger. Congratulations to Mike and Glenice.

Other competitor: Wauchope Kicking Bird.

RESTRICTED: (The Francis McKenna Trophy)

Entries: 11
Started: 10
Finished: 4

Run One: Blind and Mark. (After leaving their dog in the hide, competitors walked to the f.p. flags and fired at a blind across the river and placed behind a small tuft out in an open paddock. Dog to retrieve the blind first, then on its return handler to reload gun and without taking delivery of the bird & dog at heel, fire at a mark across the river, landing in an open paddock. Then they took delivery of the bird & sent the dog for the mark.)
Run Two: Triple mark with one walkup. Handlers commenced walkup, whereupon a short mark thrown slightly away, was fired at. Dog & handler relocated to separate f.p. & fired at a long mark directly in front, then at a 3rd mark 45 dgs left with fall of bird unseen. Handler choice of pickups.
Run Three: Blind across land, then the river, then land. About 80 metres, with a two bird thrown to the dogs right as it returned & before crossing the river.

1st: Ch.Wauchope Indiana Jones NRD JDX ADX ET (Indi) Brittany D. Eleanor Johnson 111 points

2nd: Burberry Highclaire CD (Claire) Lab.B. Maggie McLoughlin 105 pnts

3rd: Wauchope Jackpot (Chelsea) GSP.B. Ray Johnson 88 points

Other competitors: Blackboy Cream Crakka, Blackboy Coal Digger, Warrander Terrason Bob, Anwylaid Magic Matiya, Anwylaid Enfin tyasha, Anwylaid Magic Shzzamm, Mhadaidh Special Agent.

G.S.P. CLUB - NOVICE & RESTRICTED AUGUST 21ST
Posted Sunday, August 21, 2005 by webian

A new site on the Dale River in Beverley, was the venue for the GSP Club's Novice and Restricted stakes. Although there are some restrictions because of trees, for sightings of marks, the site will be a pretty and useful area for future trials.
After receiving a couple of inches of rain during the week, the river was flowing well and it wasn't surprising that nearly all the retrieves involved water. A lower than normal entry for Novice was due mainly to several dogs progressing through to Restricted. The same has occured for Restricted fields.

LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB - WINTER PLATE - ALL AGE JULY 31ST 2005
Posted Sunday, July 31, 2005 by webian

The Winter Plate trial this year, was once again held at the Harper Street site. Unlike last year, there was no rain and no wind, just a sharp brisk morning turning into a fairly warm day. Mosquitoes are prolific in the area and are almost bomber squadron size. Trees are also abundant, and undergrowth is tall and thick, with hidden gullies, logs and rabbit holes. The second and third runs took their toll on the dogs, with even young, energetic dogs being sapped of strength in coping with the conditions.
Instead of the usual four runs, the judge set three runs today (listed below), and his comments at the presentations were very complimentary on the ability and obedience of all the dogs. Scores were pretty close with five more dogs just outside the placings making it a close contest.

JUDGE: MR. TONY CARTWRIGHT

DOGS ENTERED: 15
DOGS STARTED: 14
FINISHED: 13

Run One: Doublefall
(Topscore went to Burberry Highclaire (Claire) & Maggie McLoughlin.)

Run Two: Double blind and mark (Water for both blinds)
Topscore went to Eddie Frandsen and Featherhunt Kit (Dixie).

Run Three: Doublemark, doublerise
(Topscore shared between Dixie, Altiquin Stern (Guinness), and Ellishea Asks Gypsy (Gypsy).

1st: Featherhunt Kit (Dixie) Lab.B. Eddie Frandsen 153 pnts

GUNDOG CLUB - ALL AGE - 17TH JULY 2005
Posted Sunday, July 17, 2005 by webian

The Gun Dog Club All Age was held at a picturesque property on the Dale River, Beverley. Recent rains ensured that the river was flowing well for the trial and the judge made good use of the conditions. Apart from fog for most of the morning necessitating a halt for an hour and a half, and the drama of extricating two 4 wheel drive vehicles from being bogged in mud, the trial ran smoothly.

JUDGE: MS. LYNNE STRANG

Dogs Entered: 16
Started: 16
Finished: 6

Run One: Triple Mark with offset firing point.
Long mark seen from first f.p. on same bank, thrown from paddock to fall behind a large gum. Relocation to 2nd f.p. parallel to first. Short mark just left of the f.p. thrown across the river to land behind bushes approx. 10 metres up the bank. Third mark between the previous two thrown across the river with only short period of skyline visible. Fog did hinder visibility of the two long marks at times. Pickup: Marks as fired at. Highest scoring dog on this run Altiquin Stern (Guinness).
Run Two: Blind, walkup mark and nono bird. Dog placed in hide & handler fired in direction of blind. Call up dog and proceed towards second set of f.p., during which a mark was thrown across the river to fall out of sight behind thick bushes. The blind was on the f.p. side of the river approx. 130 metres away, with a nono bird placed just to the right of the line about halfway out. Pickup blind, then mark. Best score went equally to Guinness and Chilli (Courtsum Glen Stalker).
Run Three: Double blind and mark (all across the river). Long blind 45 degrees left of the mark, across river and gullies, placed on fallen timber. Short blind 20 degrees right of mark, was second pickup, with the mark the final pickup. Best score from Josh (Featherhunt Joshua).

1st: R.T.Ch. Altiquin Stern (Imp Ire) JDX AD CD (Guinness) Maggie Hankinson 142 points.

ALL AGE TRIAL - RETRIEVING CLUB OF W.A. MAY 29TH 2005
Posted Sunday, May 29, 2005 by webian

The Retrieving Club held this All Age stake on the Dale River at Beverley, about 2 hours from Perth. The weather again was kind to us, and actually became rather too hot, which brought out the bush flies, mosquitoes and bull ants. Watching out for the inch long bull ants has become a ritual, and with several dogs having been bitten this season, the ants do seem to becoming more prolific.

LABRADOR RETRIEVER CLUB ALL AGE - MAY 22nd 2005
Posted Sunday, May 22, 2005 by webian

On what was supposed to be a showery day with occasional thunderstorms, turned out to be a fine and humid day. All the coats and jumpers were discarded as the day became warmer and warmer. Plenty of rain in the previous two weeks had swollen the Swan River over its banks and a very strong current added to the difficulties. Because of the amount of water, the judge found it necessary to alter the second run, and with land area already restricted, and so much water, we resulted in two runs with two retrieves each, across the river.

JUDGE: Mrs. G. McClure

Trial Site: Brookleigh

No sunshine this day, with high humidity and handlers getting quite wet on run three. High and dense kikuyu on two of the runs required hard work to tackle, and took the sting out of the dogs. The Labrador Retriever Club held their Annual Winter Cup trial for All Age dogs. A wet and blustery day made conditions difficult for competitors.
