I first met Bill Loftus and Tammy soon after I started trialling with Cass. Generally after completing our runs in Novice or Restricted I would find a spot, out of everyone's way and watch "the heavies" in action. As I started to learn about trialling, it was fascinating to see how they went about handling their dogs.
Tammy was undoubtedly the best dog at "taking a line". I think Bill Loftus could have nominated a bit of a bush, that was practically out of sight and Tammy would take a line right through the middle of it.To me it was absolutely incredible.
I think Bill Loftus and Tammy would have to be considered one of the all time greats in trialling. Although Bill was very competitive he was always helpful to those who asked for it. He certainly gave me many good tips on handling not only when I was a complete Novice but also when we were providing serious competition for each other.
I remember talking to him about the way Tammy and Cass, sort of split the All Age wins between them. Making it very hard for other good dogs to get their titles. His attitude was that if they were good enough they would eventually get there. In the meantime our job was to set a standard for others to reach. Most sports seem to have no difficulty in recording the history of their sport. Cricket for example keeps track of what has been achieved in the past and keeps it up to date.
I think it would be wonderful if we could eventually a similar record. Anyway I would like to start the "ball rolling" hopefully others will join in. Remember that some of the best individual runs are done by dogs that do not win the trial. They are still good dogs worthy of being remembered, after it takes time and experience to build consistency.
