Who are your tips for the 2006 National? (Tipping Comp)

Postby Jason Ferris » Thu 07 Sep 2006 2:44 pm

Do you think you can pick the best five dogs in the 2006 national retrieving trial championship? If so enter the inaugural AWRC national ‘pick-em’!

Here’s how it works…

To enter: reply to this post nominating six of the 39 dogs entered in the National that you think are most likely to finish. The first five dogs you name will be used in the pick-em. The five picks don’t need to be in any specific order or ranking. The sixth dog you nominate will be kept as reserve in the event of a tie in the pick-em.

As the trial progresses, each dog will score one point for each run it finishes. Dogs which finish the trial get an extra 5 points and the winner gets a bonus 10 points. So for example a dog which goes out on run 5 will score 4 points (one for each run it completed), a dog which completes the trial will receive 8+5=13 points and the winner will receive 8+5+10=23 points.

The pick-em competitor whose five dogs score the most points wins the pick-em.

Once a particular combination of six dogs has been picked, that combination can’t be picked by another person. So get your entries in early!

Once you have entered, you can't edit or change your picks. It's a "lock-em in Eddie (or in this case Jason)" type situation. It will be too hard to keep track of picks if people start changing their mind.

If there is a tie for first place, the reserve picks will be added to the joint leaders tallies. If this doesn't resolve the tie, the winner will be the person involved in the tie who entered the competition earliest (as determined by the date and time of their post in this thread).

The pick-em winner will receive a bundle of national merchandise including a stubby holder, enamel badge, cap and pen kindly donated by the national organising commitee.

Entries close at 5pm on Thursday 21 September (the day before the national starts). The only way to enter is to reply to this post. Don’t email me your entries.

The full details of the entries is on the AWRC 2006 National Page. A summary is listed below to make copying and pasting your picks easier.

You also might want to check out the AWRC Retrieving Dog of the Year standings on the Trial Schedules and Results forum as a form guide.

Good luck.

Jason.

Jason

Had a fascinating time looking through the list of 2006 National entrants. The WA organizers must be feeling quite chuffed with each other. This has to be the first time, in a very long time, if indeed not the first time ever, that we almost have a REAL retrieving trial :D. Of the 39 dogs entered, a staggering 38 [97.44%] are PROPER retrievers! Not a HPR among them and only the one [2.56%] flusher to detract from an otherwise clean sweep by retrievers. :D :D

Additionally, of the 38 retriever types, 31 [79.49% of total entrants or 81.58% of retrievers entered] are Labradors; six [15.38% of total or 15.79% of retrievers entered] are Golden Retrievers; and one [2.56% of total or 2.63% or retrievers] is a Flat-coated Retriever. It surely speaks volumes for the dominance, in both number and performance, of the Labrador in our sport.

This dominance is further reinforced when you glance through the list of dogs currently vying for the 2006 Retriever of the Year award. Among the present top 20, 17 [85%] are retrievers. Labradors account for 13 [65%] of these. The top ten places are again predominantly taken out by retrievers [80%] with Labradors taking 70% of the cake. The top five positions are totally dominated by retrievers; 80% of them Labradors!

Those are the simple statistics. What is made of them is entirely a matter of individual of logic and vision. I no longer gamble but I know where I’d be putting my hard-earned pennies if I did fancy a flutter.
:D :D

Garrick,

Last time I heard Greg he referred to the flatcoat as "Flathead" not sure if that is his normal name or just reserved for special occasions.
